2012-13 Bowl Game Picks

December 14, 2012

In past years, I have compared my picks to that of a coin flip.  This year, the coin won’t continue, but the picks will.

Overall, it was a great season picking games, and hopefully the bowl picks keep up the great work.

Last Week:  1-0  (1.000) [Navy beat Army]

Overall:  302-77 (.797)

Nevada vs. Arizona  (First bowl game of the year, should actually be a close one.)

Toledo vs. Utah State

BYU vs. San Diego State  (Essentially a home game for San Diego State.)

Central Florida vs. Ball State  (Essentially a home game for Central Florida.)

Navy vs. Arizona State

Oregon State vs. Texas  (Essentially a home game for Texas.)

TCU vs. Michigan State

North Carolina State vs. Vanderbilt  (North Carolina State has been disappointing after the Florida State win.)

Georgia Tech vs. Southern California

Wisconsin vs. Stanford  (Defense wins this game.)

Florida State vs. Northern Illinois  (Congratulations to Northern Illinois for making it to a BCS game, that will be about when the celebration ends.)

Oregon vs. Kansas State  (The only other good BCS game match-up.)

Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma

Pittsburgh vs. Mississippi

Kent State vs. Arkansas State

Notre Dame vs. Alabama  (Game has the potential to be one of the greatest in college football history.  Alabama just has a little more offense than the Fighting Irish.)

Keep track of all of the bowl game results here.

Week 11 College Football Picks

November 6, 2012

An overall good week in Week 11.  A couple of upsets didn’t quite end up happening, but that’s the risk.

Don’t forget after checking out this week’s picks, to check out the 2012-13 Bowl Predictions.

Last Week:  20-6 (.769)

Overall:  225-53 (.809)

Ball State vs. #25 Toledo (This game is the reason these picks are coming Tuesday, as opposed to Wednesday or Thursday.)

#10 Florida State vs. Virginia Tech (Any other year, you would consider calling the upset.)

#15 Texas A&M vs. #1 Alabama (If Alabama is going to get upset in the regular season, this will be the week.)

#2 Kansas State vs. TCU (If Kansas State is going to get upset in the regular season, this will be the week.)

#3 Oregon vs. California

#4 Notre Dame vs. Boston College

#5 Georgia vs. Auburn

Louisiana-Lafayette vs. #6 Florida

#21 Mississippi State vs. #7 LSU

Arkansas vs. #8 South Carolina (If this Arkansas team has QB Tyler Wilson playing well, a poor South Carolina secondary might make this a closer game.)

#9 Louisville vs. Syracuse

#11 Oregon State vs. #14 Stanford

Baylor vs. #12 Oklahoma

Maryland vs. #13 Clemson (It’s hard to think of an upset here when you are out of quarterbacks.)

Penn State vs. #16 Nebraska (Nebraska really needs this one to show they are legitimate, not just the class of the Big Ten because of Penn State and Ohio State having postseason bans.)

Iowa State vs. #17 Texas

#18 UCLA vs. Washington State

Arizona State vs. #19 USC

#20 Louisiana Tech vs. Texas State

Kansas vs. #22 Texas Tech

Army vs. #23 Rutgers

#24 Northwestern vs. Michigan

Miami (FL) vs. Virginia

Georgia Tech vs. North Carolina

Wake Forest vs. North Carolina State

Missouri vs. Tennessee

Vanderbilt vs. Ole Miss

Week 7 College Football Picks

October 11, 2012

Not the best week in picking college football games, as it was a rough go for a couple teams.

Congrats to North Carolina State on that upset of Florida State.  I’m not sure anyone saw that coming.  I think it’s time for me to get off the Auburn and Virginia Tech bandwagons, as those teams keep disappointing me.

Also, be sure to check out the 2012-13 Bowl Predictions.  Click here or on the tab at the top of the page.

Last Week:  16-9 (.640)

Overall:  147-31 (.826)

#1 Alabama vs. Missouri

#3 South Carolina vs. #9 LSU (If the Gamecocks win, they’re as good as anyone in the country.  But it will take a better performance than they put out against Georgia, to beat LSU, at night in Death Valley, against a team coming off a loss)

#4 Florida vs. Vanderbilt (No let down, but will be closer than people think, because Florida is highly over-rated.)

#5 West Virginia vs. Texas Tech (The correct second-best team in country might actually be No. 2 by end of the weekend)

#6 Kansas State vs. Iowa State

#17 Stanford vs. #7 Notre Dame (This could be the game that actually demonstrates that Notre Dame is legitimate)

#8 Ohio State vs. Indiana

#10 Oregon State vs. BYU

#11 USC vs. Washington (Washington always plays USC tough.)

Boston College vs. #12 Florida State

#15 Texas vs. #13 Oklahoma (Very close, but Texas is just a little better, and I’m not a believer of Oklahoma yet)

#18 Louisville vs. Pittsburgh

Tennessee vs. #19 Mississippi State

Syracuse vs. #20 Rutgers

Fordham vs. #21 Cincinnati

#22 Texas A&M vs. #23 Louisiana Tech (This may end up being the closest game of the week)

Fresno State vs. #24 Boise State

Illinois vs. #25 Michigan

Duke vs. Virginia Tech (I clearly still haven’t learned from my mistakes [See above])

North Carolina vs. Miami (FL)

Maryland vs. Virginia

Auburn vs. Ole Miss (As crazy as it sounds, Ole Miss is not a bad team)

Kentucky vs. Arkansas

Clemson Takes Spotlight from South Carolina

October 26, 2011

If you have not seen the Clemson Tigers this season, here is what you have missed.

They’re good.  They’re really good.  They’re great.

They are also fifth in the most recent BCS Standings and have a legitimate shot of going to a BCS game, if not the National Championship.

Wait, wasn’t this supposed to be the script for the South Carolina Gamecocks?  Wasn’t this supposed to be the Gamecocks’ year?

While the Gamecocks had their run at an undefeated season broken up against Auburn, the Tigers are quietly undefeated and have one of the most explosive offenses in the country.

They now have a Heisman Trophy candidate in Tajh Boyd and the most exciting freshman in the country in Sammy Watkins.

This is from a team that many people thought might make it to a bowl game and end up spending the offseason looking for a new coach.

Now, Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney is known as the guy who gets too excited in post-game interviews.

Instead, the Tigers are suddenly two tough games (Georgia Tech and South Carolina) and a potential ACC Championship game berth away from re-kindling the magic from the 1981 season.

They upset both Virginia Tech and Florida State, and pulled out a miraculous comeback against Maryland to get in this position.

For a team that everybody wrote off earlier in the season, they are for real.

They have enjoyed being outside of the spotlight with all that has gone on at South Carolina, whether it was Stephen Garcia being kicked off the football team or Marcus Lattimore’s season-ending knee injury.

The Tigers might be the best team nobody is talking about.

And for Clemson fans and Clemson haters, they are young and aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Author’s Note:  Yes, I know this show and website is from the University of South Carolina.  However, sometimes there are situations where a hated rival has to be given credit where its due.  This column was in no way, shape, or form trying to slight one school or the other, just pointing out a really good team.

Clowney, Beamer…Just Another Day for the Gamecocks

February 14, 2011

Valentine’s Day 2011 for the South Carolina Gamecocks will be one to remember.  While it was originally thought it would be about the highs, it will also be about the lows.

At appoximately 10:30 a.m., the unanimous number one recruit in the country, DE Jadeveon Clowney committed to the Gamecocks in a long, drawn out recruiting process.

While it was a joyous occasion for the Gamecocks, Clowney and his family, and South Pointe High School, it was embarassing to see how ESPN exploited the moment.

After Clowney stepped to the podium to announce his decision, he was told that he had to wait at least two minutes for ESPN to come out of a commercial break.  It created an awkward moment in the flow of events.

This was once again a demonstration how ESPN dictates the sports’ world, whether sports’ fans love it or not.

It was also announced in a press conference today that Gamecocks’ Special Teams and Recruiting Coordinator Shane Beamer will leave to join his father, Frank, at Virginia Tech.

This is an excellent opportunity for Shane, who will get a chance to inherit the job with the Hokies.  No word on who will replace Beamer.  South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier said that they will look for the best for the special teams coordinator role, but will likely name someone in-house to be the new recruiting coordinator.

For the Gamecocks, this is a huge loss.  Many considered Beamer as one of the top candidates to become the head coach at South Carolina when Spurrier retired.  While his special teams group had some bright spots, Beamer will always be remembered for how he changed recruiting for the Gamecocks.

Gone were the David Reaves techniques of just looking for talent.  Beamer started looking for good character guys who had talent as well, hoping to have the Gamecocks appear on the front page for on-the-field-play, rather than always making the front page for the latest arrest.

An even bigger sign of what Beamer has done, just take a look at front pages on newspapers and websites, and see what the story is about this time.

Chick-Fil-A Bowl Preview/Pick: South Carolina vs. Florida State

December 30, 2010

ATLANTA, GA. — Of the 35 different bowl games this year, the Chick-Fil-A Bowl between #19 South Carolina and #23 Florida State is likely the one game that is so evenly matched, that it is near impossible to pick a winner.

Florida State and South Carolina both lost in their respective conference championship games, both have had great games, and both have had disasters.

Florida State Coach Jimbo Fisher is in his first year, replacing the legendary Bobby Bowden, leading the Seminoles to the ACC Conference Championship game, where they lost to Virginia Tech.

South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier seems to have the Gamecocks’ program on track, getting the team to its first SEC Championship Game, with an embarrassing loss to Auburn.

Looking ahead to this game, Jimbo Fisher said in his press conference on Thursday that senior Quarterback Christian Ponder would be ready to play.  Fisher has not decided whether Ponder or E.J. Manuel would get the start, but that both would play.

The only injury for South Carolina would be OG Garrett Chisolm, who re-aggravated a knee injury earlier in the week.  Terrence Campbell will get the start, but expect to see Jarriel King play as well.

The difference in this game will be the defense.  Will South Carolina finally figure out the defensive secondary that has plagued them the second half of the season?  Will South Carolina be able to establish an offense against a historically tough Florida State defense?

While Spurrier downplays a difference between Ponder and Manuel, there is a small difference.  Manuel has more of an ability to get out of the pocket, while Ponder can beat you with his arm.  According to Spurrier, South Carolina’s coaches say that Ponder and Manuel are more similar rather than different.

On paper, these teams are very similar in offensive and defensive categories.  As previously mentioned, each team has had its highs and its lows, and each made it to their Conference Championship game by being in mediocre divisions.

In the end, SEC prevails.  The speed of the SEC will off-set the balance of the ACC.  However, this game could easily go either way, and expect a back and forth affair.

South Carolina wins the Chick-Fil-A Bowl, 24-23.

When Spurrier Leaves, Who is his Replacement?

December 11, 2010

With the unexpected resignation of Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer, it reminds you that anything in the coaching business can change unexpectedly.

While South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier is not expected to leave the school anytime soon, it is never too soon to discuss viable candidates that could succeed Spurrier.

There are a couple in-house candidates as well as coaches who currently have other jobs.  We will look at three different candidates for each category.

In-House Candidates (Coaches currently with the school)

Shane Beamer, Special Teams Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator, Spurs & Strong Safeties Coach – Beamer has a long title, but it is well deserved.

Beamer, the son of Virginia Tech Head Coach Frank Beamer, has made big strides in improving the special teams of the Gamecocks.

He has also raised the bar in recruiting for the Gamecocks.  After many failures with recruits from David Reaves, Beamer has brought in better athletes and athletes with good heads on their shoulders.

Beamer has the background and is a rising star in the coaching ranks.  South Carolina should do whatever is necessary to keep Beamer around for the long haul.

G.A. Mangus, Quarterbacks Coach – The main difference in Gamecocks’ QB Stephen Garcia’s development is Mangus.  When Mangus was hired, he was dubbed as Garcia’s baby-sitter.

There has also been a noticable difference when Mangus calls plays as opposed to Steve Spurrier.  Mangus tries to run the ball much more than Spurrier attempts.

Mangus, a Spurrier disciple, is only in his second season at South Carolina, but his presence has been felt.  He is very similar to Beamer in his reputation in the coaching world.  He is a rising star and will be a candidate for offensive coordinator jobs around the country.

Steve Spurrier Jr., Wide Receivers Coach – The only reason Spurrier Jr. is put in this list is because of his last name.

Much like the Lou and Skip Holtz experience, Spurrier Jr. has lost stock in his coaching capabilities.  While you could say his receiving core is among the best in the country, you have to look at improvements in recruiting.

Spurrier Jr. has also lost tasks within his tenure at South Carolina.  He was once the play-caller, but the idea of him calling plays any time soon won’t happen.

Like I said, the only reason he is a listed candidate, is last names go a long way in figuring out coaching pedigree.  See Derek Dooley, Head Coach for the University of Tennessee.

Outside Candidates

Gary Patterson, Head Coach, TCU – Patterson has guided TCU to multiple undefeated seasons, and multiple BCS games.

His name always comes up when big-time jobs come up every year.  Yet he remains at TCU, who will be in the Big East, a BCS conference soon.

However, when Spurrier leaves, he will be linked to this job.  Patterson was hired by current South Carolina Athletics Director Eric Hyman when Hyman held that position at TCU.

Hyman has made statements in the past that Patterson and him still communicate.  It would be no surprise if he follows Hyman to South Carolina.

Chris Peterson, Head Coach, Boise State – There is no secret about the success Peterson has had at Boise State after he inherited the job from Dan Hawkins, the now-former Colorado Head Coach.

It is worth pointing out that if Peterson balks at talking to Florida about their current head coaching vacancy, one would begin to wonder if Peterson would ever leave Boise State.

Not just for Florida, but for everyone, Peterson is at the top of the coaching wish list.  However, after the failure of Hawkins, you wonder if he is not willing to step-out of his comfort zone.

Brent Venables, Associate Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers Coach, Oklahoma – It is important to mention an up-and-coming coach to the conversation of potential replacements for Steve Spurrier.

Venables has been at Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops’ side now for several years.  He is recognized as one of the top defensive coaches in the country.

Hyman has shown that he has been willing to hire up-and-coming coaches.  This differs from the mindset of former South Carolina Athletics Director Mike McGee, who often hired the “big name” coach.  See Lou Holtz, Former South Carolina Head Coach.

The question would be whether or not you could pry Venables away from Oklahoma.  He is a likely candidate to replace Stoops, whenever that situation arises.

Venables would bring a defensive mind to South Carolina, an aspect that a South Carolina head coach has not had for several years.

There you have it.  While Spurrier is not expected to leave South Carolina anytime soon, it is important to realize that he is not getting any younger.

He has earned the right to coach the Gamecocks as long as he wants, but one day, the need of a new head coach will arise.

26 Things to Watch Until Next Saturday

November 10, 2010

Since there will be no show this Saturday, November 13th, there would be nothing better to point out 26 things that might happen in the next week and a half.

Some of them have no relevance or are sarcastic remarks about things that are not important.  However, it will give some food for thought.

1.  The Gamecocks and Gators battle for the SEC East – The winner of this game gets to face a team from the mighty SEC West in Atlanta on December 4th.

The bad news:  one of these teams will have to face a team from the SEC West.  The Western Division is so much better than the East this year, that you almost wish that two teams from the SEC West would play in the championship game.  Unfortunately, the rules don’t work that way.  Unfortunately, the winner of this game will likely be throttled by any team in the SEC West.

2.  Auburn’s Cameron Newton is not ineligible – It seems like nobody can accept that Newton is better than everyone in college football.

A week after rumors that Newton was purchased by Auburn, now news comes out that he cheated on tests while at the University of Florida.

While that is no laughing matter, let us not take away from the fact that Newton turned his life around from the mistakes he made with the Gators.

Oh, and this just in, Cameron Newton just kicked a puppy.

3.  TCU is for real, just don’t tell the BCS that – What is it going to take for people to realize that TCU actually deserves a spot in the National Championship?

After stomping over the 5th-ranked Utah Utes, TCU was still stuck at third in the BCS.  Utah did not get passed the 50-yard line until mid-way through the second half.

Everyone entered this season talking about Boise State’s chances to make the title game, but TCU quietly has become in the driver’s seat as the non-BCS team to play for a national championship.

While it was just Utah, they aren’t your everyday non-BCS team.

4.  There is no dominate NFL team – The closest thing to the best team in the NFL is the Pittsburgh Steelers.  But they are only tied for first place in the AFC North.

Normally at this point in the season, there is still an undefeated team or two, typically the Indianapolis Colts.  There is also at least one team on the verge of clinching a spot in the postseason.

This is truly a league of parity right now, and for the NFL, that is not what you wanted.  Potentially on the verge of a work stoppage, the NFL was hoping for a great season, not one of multiple controversies and lousy play.

5.  Jimmie Johnson will win at Phoenix – After an embarassing run at Texas, which included switching the pit crews with a teammate, Johnson will come out a determined driver at Phoenix.

Johnson, usually up by over 100 points by the second to last race of the season, is actually second in points to Denny Hamlin.

The drive for five has been a rough road for Johnson, but you can never overlook a four-time consecutive defending champion.

6.  Tennessee will win out and go to a bowl game – This would mean the team would have to win every game the rest of the season, but their schedule is relatively easy.

Tennessee faces Ole Miss this week, followed by games against Vanderbilt and Kentucky.  It is not an easy road, but very doable.

It won’t be a premier bowl, but the strong run to the finish will put the Volunteers in a lower-tier bowl.  Plus, they have also found their quarterback in Tyler Bray.

7.  Oregon will lose this season – Oregon, dominating teams all season, will lose before this season is over.  Unfortunately for the Ducks, that will cost them a chance at a national championship.

Oregon faces California, Arizona, and Oregon State to round out their season.  They have also lost their backup quarterback, Nate Costa, for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury.

Oregon is an extremely fast team, but one of those teams will trip up the Ducks chance for an undefeated season.

7.  Eric Mangini is a ‘Man’gician – Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini seems to pull off miraculous wins left and right.  He beat the defending Super Bowl champion’s New Orleans Saints and the New England Patriots.

Both times, Mangini has just flat out beaten these teams.  The favorites were outplayed on both occasions by the Browns.  Also, don’t overlook the play of Colt McCoy.  Once thought to be on the bench most of the season as a rookie, McCoy has looked impressive in each game he has played.

8. Arkansas slams South Carolina – In a meaningless game for South Carolina, the Gamecocks looked like they could not even beat Furman right now.

It was their worst game of the season, and it came at the worst moment.  With Florida coming up, the Gamecocks have no momentum heading towards Gainesville.

In addition, the fans were embarrassing to South Carolina again.  Shots of a empty Williams-Brice Stadium was all over television, displaying that most of the fans of the team, only care if South Carolina is winning.  You will never be a powerhouse football program if 75% of the fans leave at halftime.

9.  The next NFL coach to go:  Brad Childress – Yes, the Vikings did win on Sunday, but it was a game that Arizona lost.

It is very clear that the Vikings should not have welcomed back Brett Favre and should not have re-acquired Randy Moss.

It is also clear that coaching has a large part in this team’s failures.  Adrian Peterson and the running game has disappeared, and a once stout defense has some holes.

A team should not fall off so much from one year to the next, but Childress’ coaching and questionable personal decisions will cost him his job, potentially before the end of the season.

10.  It will get worse in Dallas before it gets better – After firing Wade Phillips on Monday, Dallas looks to regroup for the future with Jason Garrett as the new head coach.

However this is a team that can go two ways, up or farther down.  With so many personalities on the team, Dallas is more likely to self-destruct as this miserable season continues.

That is where Garrett has to step-up.  He has to figure out which players continue to play their hearts out, and which players give up on the season.  The players that play hard, have the upper-hand in earning their stars for 2011.

11.  Bruce Ellington will be better than Devan Downey – Sure it is a bold prediction after only one exhibition game, but he performed that well.

There were times watching the freshman point guard for South Carolina where he bursted down to the other end of the floor in the time of blinking an eye.

He tossed up a miracle shot at the end of the first half that somehow went in as time expired.

The Gamecocks and Ellington are going to take some hits this season; but watch out as this young team that Darrin Horn has put together matures.

12.  Bruce Pearl must have a great season to stay at Tennessee – While it was merely an exhibition game, it was a loss to Division-II opponent Indianapolis.

Bruce Pearl also has been in the news with recruiting violations not only while at Tennessee, but throughout his coaching career.

If Pearl wants to stay as the Volunteers’ coach after this season, he must show that the exhibition loss was only a fluke and this team will contend for an SEC title in the 2010-11 season.

Should Pearl not do that, I-40 or I-75 can take you out of Knoxville, depending on which direction you want to go.

13.  The NFL will suspend someone for hitting after this week – It was another rough week in the NFL.  Green Bay Packers S Nick Collins was fined $50,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Dallas Cowboys WR Roy Williams.

After the crackdown on hits, the NFL really had no issues.  The players seemed to ease up for a week or two, in hope of letting this storm pass over.

The NFL has only fined players since the declaration that they would suspend players.  The NFL might be ready to send the message that they are serious and don’t have a problem sitting players for hitting.

14.  Ellis Johnson and Lorenzo Ward are fighting for their jobs – South Carolina Assistant Head Coach for Defense Ellis Johnson and Defensive Coordinator Lorenzo Ward are fighting for their jobs as the Gamecocks’ defensive secondary refuse to stop a passing game.

South Carolina was lit up by a freshman quarterback two weeks ago against Tennessee (Tyler Bray), and then there was Ryan Mallett (no explanation needed there).  While depth is an issue, the Gamecock defense was supposed to be a strength of this team.

However, the defensive effort against Kentucky in the second half, was not an abhorrition.  That game revealed a serious problem for this team.  The repeated breakdown and the drop-off from a year ago puts Johnson and Ward on the hot seat.

15.  SC’s Women’s Basketball will have a better record than the men – Since both Darrin Horn and Dawn Staley arrived at the beginning of 2008, the men and Darrin Horn have had the upper hand.  Not so fast, my friend.

The women, with some addition by subtraction in terms of Kelsey Bone, might try and make a legitimate run.  Staley is a good coach, and the university is giving her time.

However, the women must start making strides this season.  Staley’s job is not in jeopardy, but it could be.  Many of the players recruited by Staley have had time to gel, so an improvement is expected.

Meanwhile, the men are rebuilding with Horn’s recruits.  The only holdover from the Dave Odom-era is Sam Muldrow, who is expected to contribute big time.  This team is still waiting on the return of sophomore Ramon Galloway from a broken foot, and the hopeful emergence of some freshmen to be competitive.

In short, the men will have a tough year; the women look to compete.

16.  There will be no surprises with the MLB awards – People will be looking for upset winners for Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Award winners for the 2010 season.

For each league, there are the favorites for the award, and generally, there will not be anyone upset over who wins the awards.

Also, like normal, the announcements will come and go without much pomp and circumstance.  That is a far cry from when everybody spend days speculating on MLB award winners.

17.  Virginia Tech will still go to a BCS game – When Virginia Tech lost to Boise State to open the season, it is excusable; Boise State is a good team.  Lose to James Madison, well you know the answer.

However, those were Virginia Tech’s only losses this season.  The Hokies are in position to win the ACC and return to a BCS game.  Still like the BCS?

Love or hate the BCS, Virginia Tech has done everything they were expected to do.  Frank Beamer once again asserted why he has been with the Hokies for so long, and how success leads to job security.

18.  The NCAA is clearly investigating Cameron Newton – Already referencing this, it needs to be done so again.

There is no question that the NCAA is investigating Newton.  Typically, you can tell it when tidbits of information surrounding a player is continuously revealed.

Auburn has little they can do about this now.  If Newton was ineligible, they would already have to give up ll the wins this season, meaning it makes no sense to sit him to try to ‘save the season.’

It would truly be a shame if an incredible athlete like Newton, would be sullied by this investigation.

19.  Terrell Owens makes a team bad – It did not even take a full season for Cincinnati Bengals’ WR Terrell Owens to make his presence known.

Normally Owens gets along with everyone in the first season or two before he forces his personality on his teammates.  This was quite evident in Monday’s game against the Steelers as Owens began to yell at Carson Palmer.

Owens still believes that he is the best receiver in the league.  However, Owens is no more than a complimentary receiver that cannot run routes and cannot make the easy catch.

20.  Fear the Beard – As one bearded man goes away, San Francisco Giants’ reliever Brian Wilson, another returns to the spotlight.

Conan O’Brien returns to television after nine months of being censored from television.  Why does this apply to a sports blog?

Both would help out the rest of the world by shaving the beard off.  Raise some money for charity.

21.  Jon Miller and Joe Morgan leave Sunday Night Baseball – ESPN announced that the duo will not return to its Sunday Night Baseball telecasts in 2011.

Morgan’s contract expired and will not be renewed.  Miller will be offered to return as a baseball announcer for ESPN Radio’s baseball coverage.  That isn’t a slap in the face.

Perhaps, this means that Jon Sciambi will get a chance to be the new voice of Sunday Night Baseball, after Miller and Morgan went 21 years.

22.  Without Lattimore, the Gamecocks have nothing – In games against Kentucky and Arkansas, the Gamecocks have been forced to operate the offense without freshman phenom Marcus Lattimore.

It is nice when one guy brings such talent to an offense, but no team can fall flat on its face when he goes out of the lineup.

This team goes when Lattimore goes.  When he is on the sidelines, this team is lost and could not beat an average team offensively.

23.  Dolphins give up on Chad Henne – Sure this might be a little over the top, but explain to me what you are gaining by starting Chad Pennington?

Pennington has the intangibles, and he has an arm that can make a throwing motion, but the ball doesn’t go anywhere.  Henne at this point is the better quarterback, even if he has thrown 4 interceptions in his last two games.

This is a desperation move by the Dolphins, that will soon become an epic fail.

24.  Wade, James, and Bosh…the terrifice trio – Maybe not.

It has been more of a one man show of Dwyane Wade.  Wade was responsible for every point in overtime against Utah on Tuesday night.

Eric Spoelstra has to feel that seat getting warm with the poor start of the Miami Heat.  Pat Riley, although he has denied it, has to be licking his chops to get the opportunity to coach this team.

25.  College Basketball Starts this week – The most exhilarating sport in college finally returns.

Four more teams get to play in the NCAA Tournament this year.  March is just around the corner and these games are pivotal in building that resume.

Boise State 2010 Schedule: Tough Enough?

March 15, 2010

As all college football fans will tell you, the Boise State Broncos have been evolving into a powerhouse over the past few seasons.

Boise State had burst onto the scene with their win for the ages over Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.  They finished their 2006 regular season with an undefeated 12-0 record.

Since the 2006 season, Boise State has a record of 49 wins and only four losses, with only one of those losses coming to a conference opponent (Hawaii, 2007).  Their bowl record over these four seasons is 2-2, with wins over Oklahoma and Texas Christian and losses to East Carolina and Texas Christian.

While some fans say the record speaks for itself, many other fans, including myself have a problem with their overall strength of schedule.  In the past four seasons, the Broncos have scheduled four BCS conference opponents (Oregon State in 2006, Washington in 2007, Oregon in 2008 and 2009).

Of their 47 regular season wins over the past four seasons, 43 of them came over opponents in non-BCS conference, including 35 wins over conference opponents.  Also, four of those wins were over FBS teams.  Is this schedule strong enough to warrant a berth to a BCS game?

It seems like Boise State has heard the ridicule and is taking an extra step to ensure the fans will get what they want.

To open the 2010 season, Boise State will travel FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland to face perennial ACC powerhouse Virginia Tech.  This contest with a national power on a neutral site clearly upgrades their schedule significantly.

Boise State will host Pac-10 contender Oregon State on September 25th.  This marks the first year of Boise State’s recent dominance in which they have scheduled two BCS opponents in the same season.

The other two non-conference opponents the Broncos have scheduled are a home game against Toledo and a game at Wyoming.  While the game with Toledo is not a “schedule-changer,” Wyoming is a much improved football and will pose a challenge for Boise State.

The conference home schedule for the Broncos will have them hosting Fresno State, Louisiana Tech, Hawaii and Utah State.  While Fresno State has improved under Pat Hill, their best player, running back Ryan Mathews has moved on to the NFL.  Louisiana Tech, who just lost former head coach Derek Dooley, and Utah State should serve as pushovers for Boise State.  Hawaii is always a coin toss.  Their system could give them a big win, or their lack of defense could cost them the game.  Bottom line, Boise State should win these four games.

The conference road schedule is a little more daunting however.   The Broncos have to travel to San Jose State, New Mexico State, rival Idaho and top 25-caliber Nevada.  Boise State and Idaho have a heated rivalry and Idaho is a much improved team.  Nevada finished last season as the only team in Division-IA football history to have three players with over 1000 rushing yards in a season.  Two of those players, quarterback Colin Kaepernick and running back Vai Taua will be returning for their senior seasons.

Boise State has improved their schedule dramatically by adding Oregon State at home and Virginia Tech, who they will play at a neutral site in Landover, Maryland.  Also, the improvement of other WAC teams, Nevada, Idaho and Fresno State will help there strength of schedule.

While this schedule is still not as tough as those played by BCS conference teams, it is a gigantic step in the right direction.  I would still like to see a third BCS team, but we cannot ask for too much.  Also note, Boise State played in thirteen games last season and could still add one more to this schedule.

But is this still tough enough?  Is this schedule worth a BCS Game?  I would say yes, but barely.  I would still like to see a third BCS team, but we cannot ask for too much.  Finishing this season undefeated would be much more impressive than past years and would warrant another Fiesta Bowl.

Is it National Championship worthy?  To this, I say no.  Boise State is clearly head and shoulders above every other team in their conference, and playing only two BCS conference teams, while BCS teams play at lease seven others each season, is not enough.  An easier path should never be rewarded the same as the more difficult path.

Of course this discussion always leads to the question I ask every time Boise State’s schedule is brought up… When will the Pac-10 just invite them to join?  That would solve all of these problems.
