Week 17 NFL Picks

December 29, 2012

It’s here, the final weekend of the NFL regular season; and with the exception of one or two games, it’s just like any other week.

There are very few games with playoff implications.  The AFC is set, with the exception of a couple of seeds.  The NFC still has a couple of division spots up for grabs (besides NFC East, either San Francisco or Seattle could still win the NFC West), some seeding issues to work out, and the last wild card spot.

Then you also have the teams with coaches who are walking on the sidelines for the final time with their respective teams.

We’ll keep picking games right through the Super Bowl, although next week’s picks will come very early in the week.

Last Week:  13-3 (.813)

Overall:  160-79-1 (.667)

Buccaneers vs. Falcons

Jets vs. Bills  (In this terrible game to have to pick, gut tells me Jets win big.)

Ravens vs. Bengals

Bears vs. Lions  (Another terrible game to have to pick.)

Jaguars vs. Titans  (Another terrible game to have to pick.)

Texans vs. Colts

Panthers vs. Saints

Eagles vs. Giants

Browns vs. Steelers

Chiefs vs. Broncos

Packers vs. Vikings  (Does anyone even realize that the Vikings could, and does have an inside line to make the playoffs?)

Dolphins vs. Patriots

Raiders vs. Chargers  (Another terrible game to have to pick.)

Cardinals vs. 49ers

Rams vs. Seahawks

Cowboys vs. Redskins  (Have to give the edge to the home team.)

Week 16 NFL Picks

December 20, 2012

The NFL is on Saturday and Sunday this week to avoid conflicts with Christmas.

Speaking of Christmas, hopefully the holiday season is as good to you, as it is to my picks.

Last week was great in the early games, but went downhill quick as soon as the 4 p.m. games started.

Last Week:  10-6 (.625)

Overall:  147-76-1 (.656)

Falcons vs. Lions  (What a disappointing season for the Lions this season.)

Saints vs. Cowboys  (It pains me to pick the Cowboys, because as soon as I jump on that bandwagon, they will disappoint.)

Titans vs. Packers

Colts vs. Chiefs

Bills vs. Dolphins

Chargers vs. Jets  (The thriller of a game to pick.  Second straight week of two teams who will have new head coaches.)

Redskins vs. Eagles

Bengals vs. Steelers  (I refuse to believe the Steelers are as bad as they have been playing.)

Rams vs. Buccaneers  (Two teams going in different directions at this point in the season.)

Raiders vs. Panthers

Patriots vs. Jaguars

Vikings vs. Texans

Browns vs. Broncos  (This one might be closer than people think.)

Bears vs. Cardinals

Giants vs. Ravens

49ers vs. Seahawks  (Seattle is hard to beat at home.)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Week 14 NFL Picks PLUS Navy vs. Army

December 5, 2012

Not too bad of a week for Week 13 in the NFL, losing a couple of heart-breakers, and thankfully missing out on two teams tying, again.

Hopefully Week 14 proves to be a winner as well, with only one week picking below-.500 this season.

Last Week:  11-5 (.688)

Overall:  128-63-1 (.667)

Broncos vs. Raiders  (It was tempting to take the upset, but Oakland isn’t very good, and the potential for a ‘trap’ game goes out the window.)

Rams vs. Bills

Cowboys vs. Bengals

Chiefs vs. Browns  (Win for the Browns would be three-in-a-row; let that sink in for a moment.)

Titans vs. Colts

Bears vs. Vikings

Chargers vs. Steelers (The Chargers are not a good football team.)

Eagles vs. Buccaneers

Ravens vs. Redskins  (How close this game is depends on which Joe Flacco shows up.)

Falcons vs. Panthers

Jets vs. Jaguars  (The most painful game possible to have to pick.  This should be a slam dunk, but this might end up being the most entertaining game of the weekend.)

Dolphins vs. 49ers

Saints vs. Giants  (If New Orleans could just stop an offense, they’d win another game or two.)

Cardinals vs. Seahawks

Lions vs. Packers

Texans vs. Patriots  (This is actually an upset pick; New England’s defense just not quite good enough to beat the Texans.)

And…instead of another whole post for one college football game, here is last week’s summary for college football, and the pick for one of America’s best rivalry games.

Last Week:  15-4 (.789)

Overall:  301-77 (.796)

Navy vs. Army  (Just not Army’s year.)

Week 13 NFL Picks

November 29, 2012

Thanksgiving week was pretty good last week.  The stretch of all my picks, Cleveland over Pittsburgh, actually worked out.

Entering the last month of the season, it is very clear which teams are playing to play in January and which teams think the next significant date is in April.

Last Week:  10-6 (.625)

Overall:  117-58-1 (.665)

Saints vs. Falcons

Jaguars vs. Bills

Seahawks vs. Bears

Colts vs. Lions (Detroit rebounds strong following Thanksgiving heartache.)

Vikings vs. Packers

Texans vs. Titans

Panthers vs. Chiefs (Like last week, the Panthers have to be able to win this game.)

49ers vs. Rams (Just no tie.)

Patriots vs. Dolphins

Cardinals vs. Jets

Buccaneers vs. Broncos

Browns vs. Raiders

Bengals vs. Chargers (Cincinnati seems to be figuring it out, and could be a dangerous team down the stretch.)

Steelers vs. Ravens

Eagles vs. Cowboys

Giants vs. Redskins

Week 10 NFL Picks

November 8, 2012

Last week was a superior week of picking for the NFL.  Hopefully the streak continues into Week 10.

After checking out this week’s picks, click here to see which coaches might be on the hot seat heading into the final half of the season.

Last Week:  11-3 (.786)

Overall:  84-48 (.636)

Colts vs. Jaguars

Giants vs. Bengals

Titans vs. Dolphins

Lions vs. Vikings

Bills vs. Patriots

Falcons vs. Saints (This could be a trap game for the Falcons.)

Chargers vs. Buccaneers (This could signal the end for Norv Turner.)

Broncos vs. Panthers

Raiders vs. Ravens (This is a trap game for the Ravens.)

Jets vs. Seahawks

Cowboys vs. Eagles (Next week won’t be great for whichever team loses.)

Rams vs. 49ers

Texans vs. Bears (Best match-up of the week is actually in prime-time for a change.)

Chiefs vs. Steelers

NFL Coaching Hot Seats

November 7, 2012

It is approximately the mid-point of the 2012 NFL season.  For some teams, eyes are on the dreams of playing in the postseason.  For others, its looking ahead to 2013.

For the teams who can’t wait for 2013 to get hear, some of them may have new coaches.

This will be broken down into three categories:  “start packing and updating the resume,” “start locating some boxes,” and “shocking but still not shocking.”

“Start Packing and Updating the Resume” a.k.a. these coaches are gone.

Rex Ryan, New York Jets

Each year that Ryan has been in charge, expectations have been high for the Jets.  But every year ends in disappointment.

The whole Tim Tebow experiment has been a complete disaster, not based on the player, but because the Jets haven’t really tried to use Tebow in situations for him to succeed.

This doesn’t even begin to get into the issues that Ryan brings on himself with some of his ill-timed comments.

With the recent success of the Giants, I highly doubt ownership will continue past this season with Ryan.

Pat Shurmur, Cleveland Browns

If there is ever such a thing as a ‘lame duck coach,’ Shurmur is it.

With the ownership change to Jimmy Haslam and leadership change from Mike Holmgren to Joe Banner, they are certain to want to bring in a coach with the same vision.

It’s kind of a shame, because the Browns have played well this season under Shurmur, even if the record doesn’t quite reflect it.

But for Shurmur to stay, the Browns would probably have to win the Super Bowl, and that’s not happening.

Andy Reid, Philadelphia Eagles

It’s very simple, it’s just not working any longer in Philadelphia with Reid.  Sometimes, it just doesn’t work any more.  The relationship grows stale and it’s just time for someone new.

The decision to move a great offensive line coach to defensive coordinator (Juan Castillo), might ultimately sink Reid.  The Eagles likely won’t make the playoffs unless there is a lot of improvement.

Like Rex Ryan, expectations the last few years have been high for the Eagles, but they keep falling short.

But Reid might not be out of a job very long, because there could be a vacancy in Cleveland.

“Start locating some boxes” a.k.a. Barring a miracle, they’ll be out of a job too.

Romeo Crennel, Kansas City Chiefs

The second time might not be the charm for Crennel, who took over the Chiefs midway through last season.

After pulling off a couple surprise wins at the end of last season, the Chiefs haven’t led in regulation yet this year (they have one win this season, in overtime.)

At the end of the day, some head coaches are great coordinators but not great head coaches.  Unfortunately for Crennel, he’s fallen into that category.

Norv Turner, San Diego Chargers

The some head coaches are great coordinators but not great head coaches comment fits here too.  Just Turner has gotten a lot more opportunities.

With the talent on the Chargers, Turner should be leading the class of the AFC West.  Instead, his teams have had to claw just to get into consideration.

The Chargers still have a legitimate shot to make the playoffs, but even that might be enough for Turner.

Ron Rivera, Carolina Panthers

It’s hard to say whether or not the Panthers not taking the next step this season is all Rivera’s fault, but he could end up being the scapegoat.

Owner Jerry Richardson fired long time general manager Marty Hurney during the season, meaning that Rivera’s fate might already be decided.

There is no question the Panthers have the talent, but they remain inconsistent and fail to win close games.

Rivera will pop up again, and deserves another head coaching shot, but his days in Charlotte might be numbered.  Don’t be surprised if Carolina’s next coach, has more of an offensive mind.

“Shocking but not shocking” a.k.a. This is a little surprise, but you know why.

Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys

Some people reading this might be shocked that Garrett falls all the way to this category.

If anyone other than Jerry Jones was in charge, Garrett is probably safe.  However, Jones demands winning, and it’s been a long time since the Cowboys have won anything significant.

Also, since Jones isn’t going to replace himself, the next best option is the head coach.  Even if Garrett is gone, like Rivera, he will pop up again.

Ken Whisenhunt, Arizona Cardinals

After making an initial splash when he took over the Cardinals, Whisenhunt has been unable to find an effective quarterback since Kurt Warner.

Despite Arizona’s struggles, they’ve still been competitive in a weak NFC West.  That has probably been what allows Whisenhunt to keep his job.

However, there is only so long that overall ineffectiveness can be acceptable.

Chan Gailey, Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills made a big splash last season, and it looked like they were on the way back.  So far in 2012, it seems that the Bills have taken a step back.

Gailey was kind of a surprising choice when he took this job, so it’s natural to wonder if he is what is holding the Bills back from taking that next step forward.

The Bills have tons of young talent, so if it doesn’t work out, Gailey will be the first to blame and to go.

Week 9 NFL Picks

November 1, 2012

It is hard to complain when it was a winning week last week, but still not a great week picking NFL games.  It is getting to the point in the NFL season where you’ve got what you got, and where teams start looking towards next season.

Last Week:  8-6 (.571)

Overall:  73-45 (.619)

Chiefs vs. Chargers (It’s going to get ugly for the team that loses)

Broncos vs. Bengals

Ravens vs. Browns (Closer game than people think)

Cardinals vs. Packers (Arizona is falling, Green Bay needs to rise)

Bears vs. Titans

Dolphins vs. Colts (Who thought this game would be one of the most intriguing, in terms of the playoffs, not the draft, at the start of the season?)

Panthers vs. Redskins (This should have been a hyped matchup between Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III.  Now it’s a team on the rise versus a team falling.)

Lions vs. Jaguars

Bills vs. Texans

Buccaneers vs. Raiders

Vikings vs. Seahawks

Steelers vs. Giants (Easily the game of the week, and a potential Super Bowl matchup)

Cowboys vs. Falcons

Eagles vs. Saints

Week 5 NFL Picks

October 4, 2012

Week 4 was a good one, much improved from week 3, for picking NFL games.

It should get easier at this point, as everybody starts to know what teams have, and what they don’t

Last Week:  11-4 (.733)

Overall:  39-24 (.619)

Week 5 Picks:

Cardinals vs. Rams

Dolphins vs. Bengals

Packers vs. Colts

Ravens vs. Chiefs

Browns vs. Giants

Eagles vs. Steelers

Falcons vs. Redskins

Seahawks vs. Panthers (If the Panthers lose to mini-Cam [Russell Wilson], it’s going to get ugly in Charlotte really quick.)

Bears vs. Jaguars

Titans vs. Vikings

Broncos vs. Patriots

Bills vs. 49ers

Chargers vs. Saints (The Saints have to win, it’s going to be Drew Brees special night, right?)

Texans vs. Jets (Can it manage to get worse for the Jets on Monday Night?)

Show Correction:
During the show, I kept saying that Texas hasn’t lost back-to-back games since August. That was the Texas Rangers, not the Texas Longhorns football team.

Have a Happy Halloween!!
